The Nature of Change
About the book
If your child struggles with change in different areas of their life, The Nature of Change offers lessons of determination, resilience, and hope from the outside world.
Written by CNN national correspondent René Marsh and illustrated by Pumudi Gardiyawasam, this poetic and heartfelt children’s book teaches young hearts how to work through difficult life changes and hold on to hope. René Marsh penned this children’s book after losing her first child, Blake, to brain cancer. She had found solace in the natural world around her and came to know that the darkest moments we find ourselves in can eventually bloom into beautiful things.
This resource is perfect for kids ages 4 to 8 who are navigating tough situations such as loss, divorce, moving, and other major life changes.
About the book:
Kit and Amal wake up in a new house where everything feels different. But as they explore the woods nearby, nature becomes their teacher in the quietest, most profound way. A tree still growing through brokenness. A spider starts over without hesitation. Flowers holding on to hope even when they can’t see the sun.
A special note from author, René Marsh reads:
“The Nature of Change was born from the deepest sorrow a mother can know, the loss of my two year old son, Blake, to pediatric brain cancer. Blake loved the outdoors and after he passed, that’s where I found myself, sitting quietly in our backyard, surrounded by nature , and trying to make sense of a world that no longer made sense. In those still moments nature spoke to me not in words, but in gentle, profound lessons. I watched a broken tree limb hanging on by a shred of bark after a massive snowstorm still manage to sprout leaves that spring, whispering that even in our brokenness, growth is possible. These lessons became the root of inspiration for The Nature of Change. Nature’s quiet lessons of resilience, determination and hope brought healing to my heart, and I wrote this book to pass that wisdom to my daughter and to anyone who has ever needed a reminder that change can be hard, but it can also be hopeful and beautiful too.”
– Rene Marsh
So as you can see, at its core, The Nature of Change offers encouragement and wisdom in the face of a challenge, big or small.

My Personal Thoughts & Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What I love most about The Nature of Change is how it teaches children to look at the world around them and find lessons there. Determination, resilience, hope. All the things that carry us through hard changes and work us toward growth, and often something beautiful. Romans 8:28 came to mind after reading this treasure.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose
– Romans 8:28 NIV
The illustrations by Pumudi Gardiyawasam are stunning. Warm, rich, and full of life. Every spread is something you want to linger over.
This book is for the little ones facing big changes, and honestly, for the rest of us, too.
The Nature of Change by René Marsh, published by Zonderkidz, has become an immediate favorite children’s book for me.
